Hidden fees study, LLC formation services

This research digs into hidden fees across the top LLC formation services. Plenty of providers hype "$0 formation" or cheap upfront pricing, but they make their money through auto-renewals, add-ons, and stuff you can grab for free elsewhere. Our checkout experience research looked at the sales flow, while this one zeroes in on charges that surprise folks after they've already paid.

The Federal Trade Commission states: "You have to clearly lay out all costs and terms before someone buys. If there are hidden fees or auto renewals, you better spell those out."

Methodology

We looked at five big LLC services: Inc Authority, ZenBusiness, Bizee, Northwest Registered Agent, and LegalZoom. For each one, we tracked every fee past the advertised base price, like registered agent renewals, add-ons, subscription auto-renewals, and charges for stuff that’s free elsewhere. The methodology we use to rank services treats fee transparency as a big deal in our overall scores.

We sorted hidden fees into three buckets: mandatory recurring ones, like registered agent renewals. Then there are optional add-ons that get pushed hard, like operating agreements. And finally, fees for stuff you can get free from the government, like an EIN. The Better Business Bureau puts it this way: "Transparent pricing is a key indicator of a trustworthy business. Hidden fees erode consumer trust."

Inc authority hidden fees

Inc Authority gives you a $0 base service and a free registered agent for year one. That’s a solid deal, but the free year is really a hook for auto-renewal billing. Inc Authority's formation packages are truly free at the base level, though you’ll want to watch that second year renewal.

Registered Agent Auto-Renewal. Year one is free. Year two automatically bills at $179 to $249 per year. This is disclosed in the fine print but easily missed. Is Inc Authority really free? The base service is, but the registered agent renewal is a hidden fee for those who don't cancel or transfer.

Operating Agreement Add-On. $89. It’s optional, but lots of first time founders just assume it’s part of the deal. You can find free templates out there. The IRS says: "You can apply for an EIN online at IRS.gov. This service is free."

Compliance360 Subscription. Free trial, then it’s $147/year. Those automated reminders are nice, but this thing auto-renews unless you cancel, so it’s a recurring cost.

Total Hidden Fee Risk. Moderate to High. The free registered agent is a real deal, but that auto-renewal trips people up a lot. Just deselect every add-on and watch for the 11 month mark so you don't get hit with surprise charges.

Zenbusiness hidden fees

ZenBusiness has a $0 Starter plan, but the stuff you actually need, like a registered agent, operating agreement, and EIN, costs extra. And their "Worry-Free Compliance" subscription is already ticked when you hit checkout. ZenBusiness looks slick and packs in plenty of tools, but figuring out what you'll really pay is a headache.

Pre-Selected Add-Ons. Worry-Free Compliance ($199/year) is already checked for you at checkout. Lots of folks miss that until they've paid. Registered Agent runs $199/year, and that's not in the base price. Operating Agreement? $99. EIN? $79.

Auto-Renewals. Worry-Free Compliance and Registered Agent both auto-renew every year. You have to contact support to cancel, which is a pain.

Total Hidden Fee Risk. High. Those pre-selected add-ons at checkout? That's a big hidden fee risk. You have to be careful and uncheck stuff you don't want. The Better Business Bureau says these pre-selected extras are a common source of complaints.

Bizee hidden fees

Bizee (formerly Incfile) has a $0 formation package, and you get a free registered agent for the first year. Their pricing is pretty simple, with fewer hidden fees than most competitors. Bizee gives you solid value, and the pricing’s clear.

Registered Agent Renewal. Year one is free. Year two renews at $119/year. This is clearly disclosed during checkout.

Add-Ons. Operating Agreement ($99), EIN ($79), and Rush Processing ($49) are available but not pre-selected. No aggressive upsell tactics.

Compliance Reminders. Basic reminders come free. No forced subscriptions.

Total Hidden Fee Risk. Low to Moderate. Bizee’s pricing is the most upfront of the free formation services. They clearly state the registered agent renewal, and you won’t find any add-ons pre-checked.

Northwest hidden fees

Northwest Registered Agent charges a flat $39 formation fee, and that includes your registered agent. Their pricing is the clearest of anything we looked at. Northwest doesn't hide fees, and their pricing structure is about as simple as it gets.

Base Fee. $39 covers formation filing and registered agent. No hidden costs. Comparing Inc Authority and Northwest shows Northwest costs more upfront, but you won't find any surprises.

Included Features. Operating Agreement, EIN, and compliance reminders are all included in the base price. No add-ons required.

Registered Agent Renewal. That's $125 a year, and we spell it out clearly. No surprise auto-renewals.

Total Hidden Fee Risk. Very Low. Northwest has the most transparent pricing of any service we reviewed. No hidden fees, no pre-selected add-ons, no aggressive upsells. The Northwest website states: "We believe in transparent pricing with no hidden fees."

Legalzoom hidden fees

LegalZoom’s $0 Basic plan sounds great, but you’ll pay plenty for the stuff you actually need. Their pricing is the murkiest of any competitor we looked at. LegalZoom does offer the most features, no doubt, but it’s also the priciest and comes with the most surprise fees.

Registered Agent. $249-$299/year, way more than most others charge. It’s an add-on, so you won’t get it with the base package.

Pre-Selected Add-Ons. Attorney plans ($39/month) and other subscriptions often get pre-checked or pushed hard at checkout. Why LegalZoom is so expensive really comes down to those fees.

Auto-Renewals. Attorney plans and registered agent auto-renew every year. To cancel, you’ll need to reach out to support.

Total Hidden Fee Risk. Very High. LegalZoom hides the most fees and costs the most overall. The Better Business Bureau rating shows tons of complaints about surprise charges and how hard it is to cancel.
