We checked out the top LLC formation services to see what checkout is really like. We ran through each one, noting how clear the pricing was, how hard they pushed upsells, whether any fees were buried, and how the whole thing felt overall. Our goal? To help founders see what they're actually paying for and where they can skip the extras. The hidden costs of LLC formation usually pop up right at the end.

The Federal Trade Commission says: "You have to clearly tell customers about all costs and terms before they buy. No hiding fees, and you’ve got to be upfront about auto renewals."

Methodology

We ran a blind test on five big LLC services: Inc Authority, ZenBusiness, Bizee, Northwest Registered Agent, and LegalZoom. For each one, we went through checkout like a first time user, noting every upsell, pre checked add on, and price reveal. How we rank services comes from studies like this.

Each simulation used the same business details: a single member LLC in Texas with a standard filing. We tracked upsell screens, the total at checkout, and how clear the pricing was. The Better Business Bureau notes: "Transparent pricing is a key indicator of a trustworthy business."

Inc authority checkout experience

Inc Authority’s $0 base formation service still has state fees on top. Checkout moves along pretty smoothly, and upsells pop up in a sensible order. Inc Authority lays those upsells out clearly, but there are so many options that it can get a bit much.

Upsells Presented. Operating Agreement ($89), EIN Processing (free if you pick it as the “free perk”), Rush Processing ($49), Compliance360 (free trial, then $147/year), Minutes and Resolutions ($99), S-Corp Election ($79), and Registered Agent renewal (auto-billed at year two).

Pricing Transparency. Moderate. The $0 service fee is right there, plain as day, but that registered agent auto-renewal at $179-$249/year? It's buried in the fine print. The "free" EIN perk is nice, though the IRS already gives that away. The IRS says: "You can apply for an EIN online at IRS.gov. This service is free."

Upsell Pressure. Moderate. Pre-selected add-ons are pretty common, so you have to manually deselect them. Some offers throw in countdown timers to push you a bit. But the interface stays clean, and getting around feels easy.

Overall Assessment. Inc Authority's checkout is solid, but you’ve gotta stay sharp. That free first year as a registered agent is a real deal, though you should know about the auto renewal that kicks in for year two. And unless you actually need the upsells, just click them all off.

Zenbusiness checkout experience

ZenBusiness has tiered pricing, and the "Starter" plan runs $0 plus state fees. But checkout really nudges you toward the pricier tiers. ZenBusiness pushes upsells harder than a lot of other companies out there.

Upsells Presented. We’ll show you add ons like Registered Agent Service ($199/year, not in Starter), an Operating Agreement ($99), EIN Processing ($79), Worry-Free Compliance ($199/year), Rush Processing ($49), plus a few business document templates.

Pricing Transparency. Moderate to Low. The $0 Starter plan gets top billing, but the registered agent fee is a separate add-on. And that "Worry-Free Compliance" subscription? It's pre-checked by default, so your total jumps unless you catch it and uncheck it.

Upsell Pressure. High. You’ll hit multiple screens with countdown timers and “limited-time” offers. A lot of folks complain that the Worry-Free Compliance add-on ($199/year) is pre‑selected by default. The ZenBusiness site says: “Worry-Free Compliance helps you stay on top of annual reporting requirements,” but you’ll pay extra for it.

Overall Assessment. ZenBusiness gives you a solid base service, but you've gotta watch the checkout closely. If you don't need Worry-Free Compliance, just uncheck it since it's pre-selected. The registered agent fee is fair, though it doesn't beat Inc Authority's free first year.

Bizee checkout experience

Bizee (formerly Incfile) has a $0 formation package and throws in the first year of registered agent service for free. Checkout’s pretty easy. Bizee keeps it simpler than a lot of other companies.

Upsells Presented. We showed you EIN Processing at $79, Operating Agreement at $99, Rush Processing at $49, Compliance filing at $99 a year, plus a few business document bundles.

Pricing Transparency. Moderate. The free registered agent is clearly displayed, which is a big plus. The upsells are optional and not pre-selected by default. But the EIN fee is listed at $79, which is a markup on a free IRS service.

Upsell Pressure. Low to Moderate. Fewer upsell screens than ZenBusiness. No aggressive countdown timers or pre-selected subscriptions. The interface is clean and easy to navigate.

Overall Assessment. Bizee gives you one of the simplest checkouts around. That free registered agent for the first year? It's a real deal. Skip the EIN fee and just do it yourself on IRS.gov, you'll save $79.

Northwest registered agent checkout experience

Northwest Registered Agent does things differently: it’s a flat $39 plus state fees for formation, and that includes your registered agent. The checkout’s way more stripped down than what competitors offer. Northwest is known for keeping your privacy front and center, and their pricing’s pretty clear about it.

Upsells Presented. Very few. Northwest throws in an Operating Agreement, EIN, and other docs as part of the service, not as extras. You won't see any pushy add-ons at checkout.

Pricing Transparency. High. The $39 service fee is clear and upfront. The registered agent cost is included, not presented as a separate add-on. Renewal pricing is clearly disclosed.

Upsell Pressure. Very low. No countdown timers, no pre-selected subscriptions. Northwest's model runs on service quality, not pushy upselling. The Northwest site says: "We believe in transparent pricing with no hidden fees."

Overall Assessment. Northwest gives you the clearest checkout process we've seen. That $39 fee makes sense for a service that throws in a registered agent. And no upsells? That's refreshing. Sure, you pay more upfront than the "free" guys, but it's worth it.

Legalzoom checkout experience

LegalZoom’s pricing is tiered, and the Basic package starts at $0 plus state fees, but the upsell pressure is real. LegalZoom ends up being the priciest option overall, and they push extras harder than anyone.

Upsells Presented. We'll show you Registered Agent Service ($249-$299/year), EIN Processing ($79), Operating Agreement ($99), Rush Processing ($99), Attorney consultations ($39/month), and a few compliance tools.

Pricing Transparency. Low. The $0 Basic package is right there, but the registered agent fee is a separate add-on with steep prices. You’ll see upsell screens a lot, and some add-ons come pre-selected.

Upsell Pressure. Very High. Multiple screens with countdown timers and "limited-time" offers. The registered agent is aggressively marketed during checkout. The LegalZoom website states: "Protect your privacy with a registered agent," but the cost is higher than competitors.

Overall Assessment. LegalZoom pushes upsells harder than anyone, and the total cost ends up the highest. Sure, the name means something. But you're paying a lot for it. When you check out, you really have to watch your step or you'll get stuck with stuff you don't need.
